Sofinscope: 58% of French people plan to go on holiday this summer with an average budget of 1,697 euros, the highest observed in 12 years
A few months before the summer, the Sofinscope barometer took an interest in French holiday plans. More than half have planned to leave (58%, -2pts vs 2023) and they will leave mostly between one and two weeks. Despite a steeply increasing average budget, certainly due to inflation, the environmental impact of holidays is being taken into account with 43% of French people who will pay attention to it when organizing them.
KEY FIGURES
• Among the French who plan to go on holiday, 37% will leave for a week and 33% will leave for two weeks.
• The average summer holiday budget per household will be €1,697, an increase of €185 compared to 2023.
• For 76% of French people, going on holiday requires a financial effort and more than half of them save money throughout the year to finance them.
INFLATION CONTINUES TO IMPACT FRENCH HOLIDAY PLANS
For the second year in a row, there has been both a decrease in the number of households going on holiday this summer (58% compared to 60% in 2023) and a significant increase in the average budget devoted to these holidays: 1,697 euros (+12% vs. 2023). This is the highest budget since 2012.
In this context, going on holiday requires a financial effort from more than seven out of ten French people (76%, or +5pts vs 2023) and they are always more likely to save throughout the year to leave in the summer (51%, +4pts vs 2023).
Among the 41% of French people who do not plan to leave this summer, more than half say they cannot afford it (61%) and 24% would be encouraged to leave if they could benefit from payment facilities.
THE LENGTH OF STAY REMAINS RELATIVELY SHORT
As in 2023, and in order not to blow up their budget, future summer students plan fairly short periods of stay. Thus, they will be 8% from less than one week (-2pts vs 2023), 37% from one week (+1pt vs 2023 and +12pts in 12 years), 33% from two weeks (+1 pt vs 2023). Only 22% of holidaymakers will leave for three weeks or more (stable for two years).
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS ARE GROWING DESPITE FINANCIAL CONCERNS
The proportion of French people who say they limit the environmental impact of their holidays as much as possible is up 2 points compared to 2023 (43%). Three quarters of them do so as long as it does not have an upward impact on their holiday budget.
To do this, they would prefer the train to the plane to travel in France or Europe (57%), they would opt for the purchase of second-hand equipment for all members of their household (56%), they would only frequent places having obtained a sustainable label (38%) and could rent an electric car (21%).
We know how important summer holidays are in the lives of the French and we have to recognize that, in the current economic context, more and more people are depriving themselves of them or having to cut them short. Providing them with solutions to finance stays in several installments is a lever to allow them to carry out their holiday projects more serenely.
