Energy renovation: For 7 out of 10 craftsmen, the steps to access public aid and financing are holding back the start of the work

The MaPrimeRénov’ window for major renovations reopened on 7 October 2025 but will limit its support to only 13,000 files by the end of 2025. In this context of tightening, the latest Sofinscope gives the floor to craftsmen labeled RGE (Recognized Guarantor of the Environment) to understand how they accompany their customers in their energy renovation project. While 51% of craftsmen specify that the lack of financial means is one of the main reasons cited by their customers to refuse the quote, they try to support them in their efforts. Thus, more than half of the craftsmen accompany their customers themselves to prepare their aid file, 21% subcontract this support and 31% propose financing solutions.

  • 71% of craftsmen believe that the steps to access public aid hinder the start of work, and 69% cite the same difficulties for access to financing solutions
  • 56% of the artisans surveyed assist their customers to prepare their MaPrimeRénov’ type help request file and 21% subcontract this service.

ACCESS TO FINANCE, A MAJOR OBSTACLE TO ENERGY RENOVATION OF HOUSING

When we know that the average cost of a project of work in individual housing is 59,197 euros (source ANAH – January 2025), the use of government aid and various financing solutions (loan, payment in installments, etc.) is often essential for households. According to craftsmen, the most widely used financing solutions, apart from cash payment, are government aid (cited by 49% of craftsmen) and depreciable credit (cited by 42% of professionals).

However, access to these solutions is not always easy. 7 out of 10 craftsmen say that the steps to access financial aid like MaPrimeRénov’ as well as those to access a financing solution are a brake on the start of the work.

ARTISANS, AN INTERMEDIARY TO HELP CUSTOMERS FINANCE THEIR RENOVATION WORK

Faced with these financial obstacles, RGE artisans position themselves as advisors for their clients because they are able to accompany them to prepare their application for government aid (56%, -3pts compared to 2024) or subcontract this service (21%, +4pts compared to 2024). More and more of them offer various financing solutions (31%, +6pts) and a third would like to offer more financing solutions to their clients.

45% of craftsmen even say they are interested in the advance of public aid by a trusted third party, which is often paid several months after the end of the work.

The instability of public aid schemes such as Maprim Renov’ is hindering the French people’s ability to take action to renovate their homes. However, these aids are only dedicated to the public with very modest incomes and it is imperative to offer financing solutions for all the profiles of owners so that they can value their property and reduce the energy bill. To develop their activities, renovation professionals, like car dealers, must make a revolution in their distribution and offer, at the same time as their quote, financing services from a trusted third party.
