58% of French people plan to go on vacation this summer with an average budget of 1,697 euros, the highest observed for 12 years

A few months before summer, the Sofinscope barometer took an interest in the vacation plans of the French. More than half have planned to leave (58%, -2pts vs 2023) and the majority will leave between one and two weeks. Despite a sharply increasing average budget, certainly due to inflation, consideration of the environmental impact of vacations is progressing with 43% of French people who will pay attention to it when organizing them.
Sofinscope - Budget for Summer 2024

KEY FIGURES

•    Among French people who plan to go on vacation, 37% will go for one week and 33% will go for two weeks.
•    The average summer vacation budget per household will be 1,697 euros, an increase of 185 euros compared to 2023.
•    For 76% of French people, going on vacation requires a financial effort and more than half of them save throughout the year to finance it.

Inflation continues to impact the vacation plans of the french
For the second year in a row, we are observing both a drop in the number of households going on vacation this summer (58% compared to 60% in 2023) and a significant increase in the average budget devoted to these vacations: 1,697 euros (+12 % vs. 2023). This is the highest budget observed since 2012.

In this context, going on vacation requires a financial effort for more than seven out of ten French people (76%, or +5 points vs. 2023) and more and more of them save throughout the year to go away in the summer (51 %, + 4pts vs 2023).
Among the 41% of French people who do not plan to leave this summer, more than half say they cannot afford it (61%) and 24% would be encouraged to leave if they could benefit from payment facilities.

Duration of stay remains relatively short
As in 2023, and in order not to blow their budget, future summer visitors are planning fairly short stays. Thus, they will be 8% from less than a week (-2pts vs 2023), 37% from one week (+1pt vs 2023 and +12pts in 12 years), 33% from two weeks (+1pt vs 2023). Only 22% of vacationers will leave for three weeks or more (stable for two years).

Environmental concerns grow despite financial concerns
The proportion of French people who say they limit the environmental impact of their vacations as much as possible is up 2 points compared to 2023 (43%). Three quarters of them do so as long as it does not increase their vacation budget.
To do this, they would prefer the train to the plane to travel in France or Europe (57%), they would opt for purchasing second-hand equipment for all members of their household (56%), they would frequent only places that have obtained a sustainable label (38%) and could rent an electric car (21%).

« We know the summer holidays are an important period in the lives of the French and it is clear that, in the current economic context, more and more of them are doing without them or having to cut them short. Offering them solutions to finance their stays in installments is a lever to enable them to carry out their vacation plans more peacefully. » Franck Oniga, CEO of Sofinco
